Black Beginnings was founded in 1988 by Eric Robinson. His activism in the Black Community, and the popularity of Baseball Jerseys being worn by Conscious Rap Artists such as Public Enemy prompted Robinson to delve into researching defunct Black Baseball Leagues. He began researching Negro League Barnstormers and Black Baseball Leagues from the late 1800s spanning to 1960. Due to segregation and Jim Crow, Blacks weren’t allowed to participate in the Major Leagues (MLB), which only allowed Whites players until Jackie Robinson (former Negro League Player) broke the Major League Baseball Color Barrier in 1947. After thorough research, Eric Robinson began creating Black Beginnings Negro League Barnstorming Jersey/Jackets. His brainstorm was to create a Retro Look, using specialized materials that were originally used in the 1890s, and from the 1930s – 1960, and adding a millennial twist to the current garment design.

In the late 1800s Blacks didn’t have access to the pricy flannels used by the Major Leagues, so they improvised by repurposing Burlap/Gunny sacks, which was plentiful, as they were used as containers for various products such as feed, flour, and packaging for various items. This innovative fact (Burlap) prompted Black Beginnings to create fully lined Burlap Jersey Jackets with extraordinary original logos, and luxurious color combinations. As the Negro Leagues began to flourish, they graduated from Burlap to Wool/Flannels, using bright colors, and further innovations like two-tone jerseys, night games etc. The Negro Leagues were the first Professional Baseball Leagues to have night games with lights. Learning about the many revolutionary trends the Negro Leagues manifested, motivated Black Beginnings to create innovative designs using combinations of Wool, & Burlap as materials for their signature jerseys.
